New Mills Golf Course and Mellor Cross

Introduction

The perfect weather got me out for a second excellent walk of the week.

This is another fantastic shorter walk spanning the boundary between Stockport and Derbyshire.

It’s a 4.5 mile walk, perfect if you have two and a half hours to spare. Also, it can easily be reduced by a mile near the end, if you want a slightly shorter route,

It is half an hour’s drive from Cheadle Hulme.

The walk is suitable for dogs to run off the lead on many of the tracks and minor roads, but there is also some pasture, though I actually encountered no animals today.

I parked on the roadside near to the Pack Horse Inn postcode, SK22 4QQ. New Mills Golf Club is possibly an easier parking space from which to start, postcode SK22 4QE.

The walk is on OS Explorer Map OL1.

New Mills Golf Club To Mellor Cross

I took the track uphill from the road, just below The Pack Horse Inn where I was greeted by a couple of friendly horses, with Kinder Scout as a backdrop.

After the farm at Whitle, I crossed the busy Saturday morning golf club.

Passing the club house I went on down a track with views across to The Cage at Lyme Park in the distance.

I passed Shaw Farm and turned uphill to the side of this stable shed.

I then turned directly up the hill and I,m soon enjoying spectacular views.

First, across the River Goyt and Marple Bridge to the city of Manchester.

Then, directly over the Goyt and Strines to Jordan and Delly’s house at Turf Lea behind the trees on the far slope, centre left.

I made a brief stop at the Mellor Cross viewpoint.

The Second Half

Continuing on the minor road round the hillside there was a nice view of Mellor Church, with the Ukrainian flag flying.

Primrose Lane then leads to the walk’s high point, and a beautiful view to Kinder Scout.

The route heads down past the wood at Broadstone Edge.

On reaching the road, it would be easy to just wander back down to the car via The Pack Horse Inn. However, my route went down the second track on the left to Golden Springs.

At the bottom of the slope I went right, and it was still very wet and marshy, ideal hunting ground for an owl.

The path goes straight through the back garden of Cobster Farm!

And so, a right turn takes me up the hill to the car, almost tempted by The Pack Horse!

A great little local walk for a Saturday morning. Highly recommended.

And Finally….

I’ve been watching Peaky Blinders on catch up, and love the soundtrack, though it is quite dark.

This is Nadine Shah’s “Evil”. Brilliant.

Brian, there is one tricky section – about 10 – 15 yards of quite steep loose rocks, just round the corner from the shed / stable pictured. With care, I’d expect you’d be fine!

One of my favourite local walks but have always tackled it from the other side. Usually start at Brabyns, along the canal then dropping down to cross Strines Road to the Roman Lakes and then up from there. After the Mellor Cross you can take in the OddFellows for lunch or walk back down via Mill Brow and the Hare and Hounds 😁.
