Healey Dell – A Hidden Gem

Introduction

Adam, Cal, and I enjoyed a hearty Sunday lunch, followed by the pancakes we’d been unable to meet for back on Shrove Tuesday, so some exercise was called for later in the afternoon.

Adam found this interesting short walk in a book that Cal had bought for 20p from from the tennis club spring sale, and off we went to Rochdale, a 40 minute drive.

The weather was pleasant, dry, quite warm, with a refreshing breeze.

We spent a couple of hours completing the walk, but it could be done in an hour and a half.

The walk is predominantly suitable for dogs to run off the lead on fenced paths and tracks.

I parked in the Nature Reserve car park at Broadley Wood Mill, Station Road, use postcode OL12 8RT.

The walk is on OS Explorer Map OL21.

Disused Railway and Viaduct

From the car park we crossed the road and took the ramp down to the old station site, turning right to follow the old line. There are many information boards describing the area’s history.

Following the line soon brought us to the magnificent old, narrow viaduct.

After crossing the viaduct, a track on the left leads down over the road, to the river Spodden below.

The route heads downstream, but we explored the area upstream, which is a picture postcard scene.

Returning downstream, there are great views of the viaduct and river.

Heritage Centre and Tea Rooms

Following the river and tracks took us to the tea room where we bought drinks and had a look round.

Briefly retracing our steps we then crossed the river and headed up through the woods, following, then crossing, a small stream.

We emerged from the woods, crossed a field and arrived at Smallshaw Farm. The stone above the door is dated 1622. this building is 600 years old!

Open Country

At Catley Lane Head there is an attractive mill pond.

Heading up to Knacks Farm and Higher Dunishbooth, there are panoramic views all around.

The track soon heads downhill to emerge back at the Broadley Wood Mill car park, where there is another attractive pond.

There are plenty of options to walk further and enjoy discovering this area, so I am sure I’ll be coming back as it’s both beautiful and interesting!

And Finally….

On Easter Monday we were back in the City Centre to see The White Buffalo at The Ritz. A great night’s entertainment, and good to get American acts back touring in the UK. This gig was originally scheduled for 2020.

This is “Modern Times”.
